A documentary about blues singer
Mickey Champion. Mickey was born into the Louisiana blues musical culture and nurtured on the distinctive cooking styles of her native Lake Charles, influences she took with her to Los Angeles. Without Mickey, Central Avenue in Los Angeles, would have been an awfully bland patch of pavement. With her, it became a Mecca. Over the years she has performed with greats such as Billie Holiday, T. Bone Walker, and Dinah Washington doubled for Esther Phillips and shared the friendships of singers Barbara Morrison, Linda Hopkins and Ray Brewster; and trumpet player Clora Bryant. On a different level, Mickey Champion was seen as just another busy single parent doing her best to rear seven children in Los Angeles. For this she could have been the "poster mom" for the Hollywood adage, "don't give up your day job". For seventeen years Mickey was a cook for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She nourished the body by day, and the soul by night. |

After the glories of the Baltic Arts Centre, the Winking Bridge and the Angel of the North, Tyneside's tourist promoters have returned to earth - with tours of a multi-storey car park. The tatty concrete edifice in central Gateshead will host guided groups on a trial basis for three days next month. The monotonous climb up the block's identical floors is expected to be booked out - because this is the car park which featured in a chilling sequence from the cult film Get Carter. Visitors on the Heritage Open Days tours, between September 13 and 16, will be able to see the exact spot where Michael Caine, playing gangster Jack Carter, threw a rival villain over the parapet. The pull of the 1971 thriller has been so strong that council leaders in Gateshead had no doubt about including the car park in their 14 most interesting buildings. The venue ranks alongside the Tyne bridges and the graceful remains of Gibside stately home. |
